Sydney had unseasonable warmth in October and we chose to finish construction of the coop on the hottest, smokiest and strangest day of them all.
Aaron started the coop months ago, but then got swept up into lecturing at USYD and passed the baton to us at a house meeting in October. We grabbed it and ran. He turned what was an old bunk-bed frame into coop’s basic structure, and we built walls and doors to keep the chickens in and the foxes out.
Finally, only a few weeks later, we made it to the chicken shop to buy the feeders, bedding, food and the three little ladies that we hope enjoy living here with us for the next few years. It is a mighty windy night in Sydney tonight and as I write this post the wind is howling through cracks under doors and windows. Hopefully they are happy enough in their new home! We welcome Daria & Bruiser Mae (the Australorps) and Babagannoush (the Isa Brown) to The Farm, we are excited that our logo (a chicken) and motto (every chicken has her day) finally reflects the material reality of the farm! We will keep you posted on our adventures.
