I went to a seminar with Wilson Harris in England in late 2005. This was the period soon after Hurricane Katrina. Harris claimed that the opening of the novel had, in way, prophesied the hurricane, especially that it concerned the ‘rising unconscious’ of nature submerging the consciousness of civilisation; or something like that. Perhaps reading this might open up questions of what ecological consciousness and prophecy might be when a work’s content is not obviously connected to ‘nature’, ‘environment’ and ‘dystopia’.
